AR-News: (US OR) Vet says Monday is make-or-break day for emaciated horses

A Hood River veterinarian said the next 24 hours should determine whether two 
emaciated horses and a pack animal rescued from a Washington ranch will live 
or die. 
The animals were taken from a Trout Lake, Wash. ranch where eight other 
horses were found dead from starvation. 
"It is five or six days after they start feeding that they are at their 
worst, so on Monday we will see how we do," veterinarian Mike Foss said. "The 
bottom line, they are being treated, but they are not out of critical care." 
The ranch's owner, Teri Cooley, is charged with 11 counts of animal cruelty 
in Klickitat County. Her daughter said her mother had left the animals in the 
care of an employee, and given him $250 to buy food. 
"He took off with the $250," Tiffany Cooley said, adding that trough heaters 
for the horses had been unplugged, leaving them without water when cold 
temperatures solidified the liquid. 
Klickitat County Sheriff's Office investigators discovered the dead horses on 
Feb. 2 after a citizen reported there were two dead horses at the ranch. 
Teri Cooley is scheduled to appear at a plea hearing on Feb.
