SEATTLE - Experts who examined 11 harbor porpoises that died last spring -
around the time the Navy vessel Shoup conducted sonar tests near Haro Strait -
found no evidence that acoustic trauma was a factor in the deaths.

But such trauma cannot be ruled out either, the experts said.

"Lesions consistent with acoustic trauma" can be difficult to interpret in
remains that have begun to decompose, as these had, said experts enlisted by the
National Marine Fisheries Service, which issued a release on their findings
Monday.
