Beef lovers seeking some peace of mind in the wake of the recent mad-cow
scare may find it in local food stores that carry certified organic beef
or certain brands advertised as "natural" or "lean" beef.
Organically raised meat has been on the market for a while. "We didn't
started selling (certified organic beef) because of mad-cow disease," said
Linda Sawall, owner of Sawall Natural Foods in Kalamazoo.
...
One industry watchdog, however, said that the incidence of both mad cow
and its human variant may be vastly underreported. Dr. Michael Greger,
mad-cow coordinator for the Little Marais, Minn.-based Organic Consumers
Association, said the USDA tested only about 20,000 of the approximately
35 million cattle slaughtered in 2003, and points to research that
indicates a possible link between Alzheimer's and the human variant of
mad-cow disease.
Greger said he became a vegetarian a few years ago because of what he
learned about how meat is raised and processed. "There's never been a mad
broccoli," he explained. "There are safer foods out there."
