LOS ANGELES (AP) - Animal rights activists want the city Animal Services
Department to emphasize breeding control measures instead of euthanizing thousands
of stray cats and dogs.
About 150 animal lovers, some clutching pets, gathered Sunday for the Save
the Animals Summit at Loyola Marymount University. It was designed to launch a
campaign to change city policy on destroying strays. Up to 60,000 animals are
euthanized by the city annually.
"We're not going to let it happen anymore. We're going to stop the killing,"
said organizer Warren Eckstein, who hosts a pet radio show.
Shelter volunteers, animal advocates, veterinarians and pet owners were also
on hand. They complained about Animal Services policies of not accepting
credit cards to pay for adoptions as well as conditions inside the shelters.
