Hinton Parklander — Fewer spring Grizzly bear hunt licenses will be granted
this year, the provincial government announced Feb. 2.
"The government made the decision to go ahead with this as a precautionary
approach," said Donna Babchishin of Alberta Resource Development.
Only 73 licenses will be granted for this year's hunt, down from 101 in 2003
and 130 on 2002.
In three areas, including the area between Hinton and Grande Cache, the hunt
will be officially closed. This decision was also made as a precautionary
approach, according to SRD. Following a review of last year's Grizzly mortalities,
it was found that these areas had more total deaths than other areas. Bear
management area 4A was partially closed last year due to bear research
(Foothills Model Forest) occurring in the area.
In addition to granting fewer licenses and closing some areas, the province
is limiting the duration of the hunt by two weeks. In most areas the hunt will
now take place between April 1 and May 15.
This was done to reduce the chances of female bears being hunted. According
to the province, male bears tend to emerge from their dens earlier, so the
final two weeks of the hunt has been closed during the time when females are more
active.
