Calgary - Ranchers, not able to sell their cattle and faced with unpaid
bills, may be forced to sell off parts of their farms, an auctioneer says.
And some worry that once the "for sale" sign goes up on the first piece of
land , it will spark a collapse in land prices.
"The threat is that someone says, `I'd better sell before my neighbours,' "
John Kolk of Picture Butte, said. "Once the first one jumps, everybody jumps."
Cattle auctioneer Jack Daines says a number of producers are thinking of
selling off quarter-sections to keep their operations afloat.
Last week, Agriculture Canada announced that Alberta farmers had lost $230
million in 2003, a 124 per cent drop from the year before. That's after the
federal and provincial governments came up with $5 billion in mad cow aid.
Also last week, SPCA investigators found 100 dead cattle on a farm near New
Dayton and seized the remaining 100 head, saying they weren't being properly
fed or watered. The farmer said he wasn't able to feed them as much because of
the toll the BSE crisis was taking on his operation.
