WINNIPEG - NDP members want the Manitoba government to define the term
"family farm" so they can be protected by law.
Bill Harrison, president of the Carman NDP Riding Association, says party
members met Saturday to set priorities for the upcoming NDP convention. He says
family farms are a top priority because they are disappearing as corporate
factory farms take over.
Harrison says the members agreed on a definition of family farm: "a) would be
a family farm that produces agricultural commodities, and b) it's members of
a farm family producing and agricultural commodity provide and control the
capital needed to develop and operate the farm, like all the capital.
"The third thing we put down was members of the family farm owning the farm
provide, you know, most of the labour to run the operation, and that includes
the management."
