The United Nations will fund a first ever census in Bangladesh's Sunderbans
mangrove forest of Royal Bengal tigers whose population is dwindling from
poaching and loss of habitat, officials said on Monday.
The study tracking tiger footprints will likely begin February 20 after a
tiger count is completed on the Indian side of the Sunderbans, said Razia Quadir
of Dharitri (The Earth), a non-governmental group involved in the project.
"This is the first serious attempt to find out exactly how many of these
majestic animals there are in the Sunderbans," he said.
