One day, the 15 adult and two baby giraffes at Lion Country Safari in western
Palm Beach County might be munching on something a little closer to what they
would eat in the wild.
But right now, two University of Florida researchers say they've developed a
feed for captive giraffes that more closely replicates the animals' natural
food, which is largely leaves and twigs.
"It's a low-starch diet. It has a lot of carbohydrates. It's a semi-Atkins
approach to the browser world," said Mary Beth Hall, an associate professor of
animal science who developed the diet with graduate student Celeste Kearney.
Most zoos feed giraffes a grain-and-hay combo designed for cows and horses.
The group at Lion County safari are currently dining on antelope feed.
