QUESTIONS FOR QUACK'S
Dear Quack's Corner: What is a "rodent ulcer" and how did my cat get this? --
R.S.
Dear R.S.: A rodent ulcer is a lip granuloma, looking much like a rough
crater. This condition is only found in the cat. This begins as a shiny spot on
either side of the upper lip where the tongue makes contact as the cat licks his
nose. Once in a while, it also occurs at the back of the jaw behind the last
upper molar. The cause of this ulcer is not really known but it has been found
in cats positive for the feline leukemia virus. This may suggest an impaired
immune system, but not all cats with rodent ulcers are positive for leukemia.
Lip granulomas do not seem to cause the cat pain, but they must be treated
promptly or the lip will be destroyed. Cortisone and progesterone have been used
in treatment. Rodent ulcers may recur, especially if treatment is stopped to
soon. If this condition continues to recur, a squamous cell skin cancer could
develop. Just for curiosity's sake, I cannot find out why this condition is call
"rodent" ulcer.
