Dear Quack's Corner: What is a "rodent ulcer" and how did my cat get this? -- 
R.S. 
Dear R.S.: A rodent ulcer is a lip granuloma, looking much like a rough 
crater. This condition is only found in the cat. This begins as a shiny spot on 
either side of the upper lip where the tongue makes contact as the cat licks his 
nose. Once in a while, it also occurs at the back of the jaw behind the last 
upper molar. The cause of this ulcer is not really known but it has been found 
in cats positive for the feline leukemia virus. This may suggest an impaired 
immune system, but not all cats with rodent ulcers are positive for leukemia. 
Lip granulomas do not seem to cause the cat pain, but they must be treated 
promptly or the lip will be destroyed. Cortisone and progesterone have been used 
in treatment. Rodent ulcers may recur, especially if treatment is stopped to 
soon. If this condition continues to recur, a squamous cell skin cancer could 
develop. Just for curiosity's sake, I cannot find out why this condition is call 
"rodent" ulcer.
