When draped with blankets, two large horses standing in a pen in Lisa
Popp's side yard look healthy.
But under the blankets the horses are emaciated. All their ribs are
visible under a thin layer of skin and winter coat.
"You can count every bone in his body," Popp says as she points to the
side of a red horse.
Popp and her husband, Rick, own Down Patrick Farm Equine Rescue and
Sanctuary in Perry County, one of few animal rescue operations in the area
that house large animals seized from their owners.
The two horses came from the Lower Mifflin Township farm where 12 other
animals were seized Monday. Acting on a tip from Popp, officers from the
Humane Society of Harrisburg Area and the Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals visited the farm last Sunday and found what they
describe as several severely malnourished horses, cattle and goats.
Popp also is housing three goats seized from the farm. The animals will
stay with her until the case is resolved.
