SHEEP farmer Adrian Smith faces a dilemma expected to hit many Australian
pastoralists in May.
Instead of shipping his sheep overseas as part of a live export industry, he
could be forced to sell his stock to a local slaughterhouse should exporters
pass on a government-imposed fee.
Mr Smith said he would sell his 500 wethers, ready for the market in August,
to the meatworks should live exporters slash prices to recoup export fees of
60 cents for every sheep purchased.
"I really can't see why we should have to foot the bill," Mr Smith said.
>From next month, the federal Government will charge live exporters up to
$1.50 a head for cattle, sheep and goats exported to recover the $10.2 million
cost of the Cormo Express crisis.
