Territory wild camel exports to the Middle East are expected to boom
following the collapse of African markets.
Central Australian Camel Industry Association executive officer Peter Seidel
said about 10,000 Australian camels were exported each year -- valued at $2
million.
But he said annual exports to the Middle East were likely to reach 25,000 in
the next few years.
"They've traditionally sourced camels from Africa, places like Sudan and
Somalia," he said.
"In recent years the disease problem there has been so horrific that it has
stopped that trade.
"There are very serious problems -- foot-and-mouth, Rift Valley fever -- that
have decimated herds and Australia is the only other supplier."
Live exports from the Territory started three years ago.
