The Victorian Farmers Federation livestock president, Simon Ramsay, will
lobby against the possible suspension of Portland's live export trade in
Canberra tomorrow by highlighting animal welfare improvements in the industry.
Farmers filled the Portland Civic Centre last week to hear the case for
keeping the export trade open all year. The crowd was told that
restricting the trade would hurt the local economy and threaten the future
of the dairy industry, which generates about $24 million locally and 300 jobs.
Opponents of the trade were outnumbered by the pro-export crowd, which
passed a motion that the trade continue.
