“Modern commercial farms all use duck pellets that are manufactured according 
to strict specifications,’’ explains the 52-year-old farmer who has 200,000 
ducks at his farms in Perak.   
Poultry, in a multi-racial and multi-religious country like Malaysia, is 
understandably a huge industry, valued at around RM6bil. For example, in 2002, 
Malaysia produced 102 million broiler chickens, and 5.4 million ducks. Where the 
latter is concerned, Perak is king, producing 83% of all ducks consumed in the 
whole country, thanks to its numerous disused mining pools which make ideal 
sites for duck rearing.
