Once an Easy Mark, Resident Geese Are Getting Wary
By Angus Phillips
Sunday, February 8, 2004; Page E04
When hunting for resident Canada geese in the Washington suburbs first got
cranked up 10 years ago, much was said about how unsporting it would be. The
lumbering "golf course geese" lacked the wariness and survival instincts of wild,
migratory birds, we all felt, and would fall to the gun like tenpins.
And so they did -- for a while. An early foray to a country club near the
Beltway left me feeling downright guilty. We had to shoo geese off the fairways
to get them aloft and when they soared back in, fearless, it was child's play
to bring them down. We were doing a public service, we told ourselves, by
thinning the burgeoning flock of so-called nuisance birds, but it sure didn't feel
like sport.
