[opinion from The Fulcrum]

I AM AMAZED at the ignorance that the Fulcrum displayed in printing "Who's
coming to dinner?", by Rebecca Graber in your Jan. 15-22 issue. The fact
is, Graber doesn't seem to have a grasp on the real problem of BSE (mad
cow disease) and you have encouraged this point of view by printing it and
giving it credibility.

When citing the fact that Canada will be spending $92-million on testing
for BSE over the next five years, Graber comments, "testing alone will not
prevent the development or spread of BSE."
...
One of my favourite sayings is 'if you ate today thank a farmer.'
Obviously since Graber is a vegetarian, she feels no need to thank cattle
farmers; "if they must suffer a little, boo-friggin-hoo."

What she fails to realize is the fact that most cattle farmers are not
"factory farms" operators or large, faceless corporations; they are
smaller scale family farms, not only in Alberta, but also Ontario, Quebec
and, in fact, right across the country.
