A recent crime trend in Bastrop County has the sheriff's office worried. In
the past six months, 26 dogs have been reported stolen.

Sheriff Richard Hernandez said the high numbers are indicative of a dog
fighting problem there.
Pet owners in Austin are also concerned. When Hazey Fairless came home to an
empty backyard in East Austin, she didn't immediately think her dog, Sergei,
was stolen. She thought he just jumped the fence.

Then her neighbors told her they saw three men in a pickup truck drive off
with Sergei the night before.
