Ask World Wildlife Fund to Help All Animals & Support Non-Animal Toxicity
Tests

I think we really have a chance of making a difference with the recent
introduction of the "Give the Animals Five" campaign introduced into the
U.S. Congress by Jim Moran. Please take a moment to send a letter to
the WWF to ask them to join us in this crucial effort to protect millions
of animals from harm.

Re: Let’s Stand Together To Protect The Animals & Give Them Five (5) - Your
Support in Asking U.S. EPA to Increase Its Funding And Use Of Non-Animal
Test Methods

Dear Ms. Fuller;

Won’t you join U.S. Congressman Jim Moran in his campaign to help eliminate
animal suffering by promoting effective non-animal testing methods whenever
possible. On January 14, 2004 Representative Moran sent a letter to every
member of the U.S. House asking why we are still shaving animals’ backs and
spreading chemicals on their skin (often causing lesions or ulcerations
endured with no anesthetics or painkillers) when there are better methods
that are more accurate, faster, less expensive and don’t require the use
[and torture] of live animals.

As a major organization working to prevent the abuse and extermination of
animals worldwide, I ask you to fully embrace your mission and join
Congressman Moran in asking Congress to follow the lead of other OECD member
countries in progressing to non-animal methods in a minimum of five specific
areas:

1.) Skin Corrosion: Replace current archaic tests on rabbits with
EpiDerm, EPISKIN and Corrositex all of which have been validated by
ECVAM/ICCVAM and accepted internationally as an OECD test guideline.

2.) Skin Absorption: Replace these painful animal tests with modern
tissue-based methods that allow researchers to study a broader range of
doses, including those at the actual level of exposure that occurs in the
occupational environment, which is not possible with the current
animal-based methods.

3.) Skin Irritation: Replace these medieval torture chamber devices
for animals with modern clinical skin patch tests whose results prove 50%
more accurate than current animal test subject results.

4.) Phototoxicity: Replace full-body restraint of small animals with
the 3T3 Neutral Red Uptake (NRU) Phototoxicity Test cell culture method.
The 3T3 NRU is the only internationally accepted test for phototoxicity, and
costs significantly less to run than its animal-based counterpart.

5.) Pyrogenicity: Instead of locking animals into body restraints and
injecting toxics into their bloodstream, use the modern, cost-effective and
accurate Human Pyrogen Test (HPT) using donated human blood to test for
fever-causing contaminants. The HPT eliminates inaccuracies among strains
and species and costs one fifth less than the animal test with one tenth of
labor charges.

Join U.S. Representative Moran in giving the animals five. We all win when
we stand together and ask Congress to replace cruel, expensive and outdated
animal tests with modern methods. Let’s bring this lagging area of
technology into the 21st century. Instead of endorsing the largest
government animal-testing program of all time, the Endocrine Disruptor
Program, I ask you to stand up for the animals by giving them a high five.
We can do much better for our people, our animals and our environment by
embracing modern technology.

Sincerely,

Ask National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) to Help Animals by Supporting

Animal experiments have:
a 63% failure rate when detecting human carcinogens
a 75-95% failure rate for detecting drug side effects
a 70% failure rate for detecting drugs which cause birth defects
Success rates lower than those achieved by uneducated guesswork.

This is not science!!
