AR-News: (AU) RSPCA campaigns to end live trade

The RSPCA, animal rights groups and the Australian Democrats increased
their attack on the live animal trade, declaring the industry was on its
last legs.

The RSPCA launched a national campaign encouraging the public to directly
petition federal MPs to either improve conditions for animals shipped
overseas or end the trade altogether.

It was backed by animal rights organisations which released a plan to end
the industry by 2009.

Australia is the world's biggest live animal exporter, sending one million
cattle, almost six million sheep and several thousand goats to overseas
destinations every year.
