LUCKNOW: Once a land of diverse fauna, India is today struggling to protect
its wildlife from going extinct. Almost 95 per cent of the vulture population
has vanished over the last decade. Wild horses and wild asses that once had a
free run of the Rann of Kutch, are today on the verge of extinction. These were
some of the issues that were tabled for discussion during the sessions on
wildlife conservation and health management of animals at the conference of the
Asian Congress of Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarians in Lucknow on Wednesday.
The survival of wild animals is dependent depends on an environment that
provides adequate food, shelter and a conducive atmosphere to reproduction, said
senior IVRI scientist, Dr AK Sharma. "Any sudden change in their natural
environment like in the weather condition for example, of through human
interference, poaching, capturing or deforestation, puts the animals under stress, as a
consequence of which, animals die of secondary infections or predation."
