Police in northern Germany offered a major reward today for clues to a lone
suspect believed to have killed some 100 horses on farms in a broad swath of
the country. A spokesman for the state crime office in Lower Saxony, Detlef
Ehrike, said it would pay 120,500 euro ($197,995) for tips leading to the
capture of the so-called "horse ripper".

The bulk of the sum has been donated by private citizens and organisations.

Authorities said hunters, amateur marksmen and weapons collectors were among
the prime suspects in the case, responsible for the deaths in Lower Saxony
and parts of eastern Germany since 1993. Dozens of other horses have been
mutilated.
