TWO of the neglected dogs which had to be destroyed.
A REGISTERED dog breeder whose dogs were so emaciated they had to be
destroyed was convicted in Masterton District Court yesterday of wilfully ill treating
the animals.
Janet Elaine Walker, 58, was convicted and fined $2500 for failing to look
after the dogs which were discovered in a dismal condition at her Eketahuna
property by a Masterton district dog ranger last November.
Her conviction was hailed by Wairarapa SPCA president Val Ball, who said she
was appalled at the state the dogs had been found in. “It was the worst case
of animal neglect I’ve see as an inspector.” Mrs Ball said she was also
pleased with the size of the fine. “I’m starting to believe judges are taking
animal welfare seriously. “Her lawyer had gone for a conviction and discharge and
the judge said that was not acceptable.” The offence carries a maximum penalty
of six months imprisonment and a $25,000 fine.
