EUREKA -- The owner of the dog whose litter of puppies was slaughtered near
Blue Lake last year won't be allowed to have a pet for the next three years.
In a decision that brought cries of relief from animal rights' advocates who
crowded into the courtroom, Superior Court Judge Christopher Wilson on Monday
also denied the owner, Paul Curtright, of McKinleyville, permission to reclaim
the mother of the slain puppies.
Last June, Curtright's dog "Stout," gave birth to a litter of puppies.
Curtright's brother, Adam, stabbed and shot the puppies with a .22-caliber pistol,
killing all but one of the puppies. The bodies of the puppies were discovered a
few hours later at a turnout off State Highway 299, by Blue Lake City
Councilman Sherman Schapiro while he was out jogging. The surviving puppy, Lucy, is
missing one leg but is in good health and has been adopted. The mother, Stout,
is being held by the Blue Lake chief of police.
