AR-News: (US-ma) Congress approves $685, 000 to help protect right whales

HYANNIS, Mass. --

The International Fund for Animal Welfare has received $685,000 in federal
funding to help save the endangered North Atlantic right whale from
extinction.

The money will help replace whale-threatening, floating groundline
currently used by lobstermen with more whale-safe line that sinks or
hovers slightly above the sea floor.

Congress approved the funding last week. The project is coordinated by the
IFAW and also involves the Massachusetts Lobstermen's Association and the
state Division of Marine Fisheries.
