Sad ending for Sampson
Sampson the cougar, also called a mountain lion, gets a scratch from owner 
Gary Dutcher in this 2003 photo. Dutcher has special permits to keep cougars and 
servals in his northeast Fort Wayne back yard. During a trip home from a 
visit with a veterinarian on Saturday, Jan. 31, Sampson got loose when the car 
Dutcher was driving was in an accident. The cat was shot and killed by police.

A return trip from the veterinarian's office turned out to be fatal for a 
mountain lion owned by a Fort Wayne man, who now faces charges for causing the 
very danger some of his neighbors have feared. 
Gary Dutcher was driving his 4-year-old, 140-pound mountain lion Sampson home 
early Saturday evening when his white Camaro crashed into a ditch near 
Stellhorn and Lahmeyer roads. The animal was not in a cage and, even though mildly 
sedated, ran from the car and was found about four hours later hiding in the 
bushes near the Hupe Insurance Services, 7011 Stellhorn Road.
