QUESTIONS FOR QUACK'S
Dear Quack's Corner: I have a four year old black Lab. In the past few weeks
I've noticed dandruff. He also scratched constantly but I don't see any fleas.
Now I have a rash on my hands. Any connection? What is causing the dandruff
and itching? -- C.U.
Dear C.U.: Your dog may have a fur mite called Cheyletiellosis. This is also
called "walking dandruff." The mite also bites human skin that comes in
contact with the dog's coat. Your vet needs to see your dog and inspect these mites
under a microscope. Then he/she will prescribe medication for your pet. The
environment where your dog spends his time must also be treated, and see your
physician about medication for your hands. This should clear up with no
problems.
