A Humane Society shelter has been overwhelmed by a recent case of alleged
animal abuse and officials are seeking financial reimbursement to take care of
dozens of dogs, birds and a cat seized from a home last year.
The animals, and nearly 150 dead cats, dogs and farm animals, were found at
the Cambria County home of two sisters who now face 275 counts of animal
cruelty, officials said.
The Cambria County Humane Society is asking a judge to allow it to keep the
animals and be reimbursed the more than $8,000 it has spent caring for them,
said director D. Black.
The sisters, Erma Gillin, 56, and Rosemary Gillin, 81, said the animals were
neglected by their previous owners and that they took them in to care for
them. Their trial is scheduled for May.
Black said there are a number of people willing to adopt the animals, but
that a court must grant the shelter ownership before the animals can be placed in
homes.
