Two years ago, it would have been tough to convince Shawn Falls that there
was anything good about a five-year prison sentence.
That was before he met Max, a bruiser of a Labrador puppy who's given new
purpose to Falls' time behind bars at the Branchville Correctional Center in
Perry County, Ind. Now, said the 30-year-old inmate, "every day here means working
toward something good." That something good is Max, one of 22 dogs in Indiana
correctional facilities, in training to become service dogs to children and
teenagers with physical, mental or emotional disabilities. Their chief trainers
and handlers are prison inmates like Falls, nonviolent offenders who have
been given the time-intensive task of transforming rambunctious puppies into
calm, loyal and obedient canine companions.
