BEND, Ore. — An unusually harsh winter has begun to take a toll on Oregon´s
deer and elk, wildlife officials said.
They expect to see high mortality rates unless the weather warms soon.
At just one site, a 34,000-acre reserve near Tygh Valley, workers have picked
up more than a dozen carcasses.
The state has not gone looking for dead animals, but workers found them near
feeding stations. It is safe to assume there are many more, said Clair Kunkel,
Deschutes Watershed district manager for the Oregon Department of Fish and
Wildlife.
“It could be the tip of the iceberg,” he said.
