Dogs get in on the dieting craze, too

With so many fat-laden, carb- loaded foods making up their diets, it's no
surprise that one in four Americans suffers from obesity - and we're not talking
about two- legged Americans. We're talking about American pets' battle of the
bulge.
Once pet-food producers figured out that American pet owners are more than
willing to shell out big bucks to pamper their pets, they started loading up the
fats to make the foods more palatable. Worse, pet owners often can't say "no"
to a pair of begging big brown eyes, and so they share portions of human food
with their animals, which most vets say is a big no-no.
The latest trend is - no surprises here - pricey weight-loss food for pets.
Pet-food industry officials report that since 2000, sales of weight-loss food
for pets have grown 25 percent, to $500 million a year.
