Since traditional Japanese New Year's dishes are salty, people who regard 
their dogs as family members have been frustrated at not being able to share the 
meals with their furry companions, he said.
"One customer told me she felt guilty every yearseeing her dog looking upset 
at being excluded from New Year meals," he said.
Although it may not be widely recognized yet, a dog's status has risen 
dramatically in Japan over the past several years — from animal to almost human — 
in line with the rapid graying of society, and this is creating a number of new 
markets for luxury items for dogs, say some in merchandising trying to cash 
in on the trend.
