A cute bunny rabbit or a puppy may be the ideal birthday present for your
child. But there is a possibility that along with the animal, you may have also
gifted a load of infectious diseases to your bundle of joy
It is no secret that rabbits, guinea pigs and rats are used extensively in
labs for testing vaccines and drugs for a number of diseases.
What is not common knowledge is the fact that animals that are tested upon
are then sold back to local breeders who in turn sell them as pets to
unsuspecting customers.
"Ideally, before such animals are released by institutions, they should be
put under quarantine. But such a practice is rare in West Bengal ," said a
senior official, Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of
Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA).
CPCSEA personnel have recently visited the laboratories in India , including
Kolkata. One has reasons to be wary, if their observations are taken into
consideration.
