VIOLENT dogs are a threat to public safety in Warrnambool, with an average of
one victim every week treated at the public hospital's emergency department.
South West Healthcare figures reveal 54 people received treatment following
dog attacks in 2003 -- eight of which were serious enough to be admitted to
hospital.
The revelation follows a $1000 fine and conviction in the Warrnambool
Magistrates Court yesterday against the owner of a pit bull which attacked and killed
a fox terrier in October last year.
South West Healthcare emergency department director Dr Spiro Tsipouras called
for all dog owners to be more aware of their responsibilities.
He said people often made the mistake of assuming that only certain breeds of
dog could cause harm.
