The death of an orangutan in the care of conservationists has prompted
demands that a prominent animal welfare group be shut down and its founder deported.

It has also led to counter-charges that outlaw traders in endangered species
have used disinformation to smear foes of their illicit commerce.

The death late last year of an orangutan named Tole in the East Java city of
Malang sparked the controversy that rages until now. The Natural Resources
Conservation Agency had taken the large captive primate into care with help from
the non-governmental group Animal Rescue Centre, known locally by its
Indonesian initials, PPS.

Animal welfare workers said Tole died for the same reason it was taken away
from its owner: it had been in dire condition, was overweight and suffering
from diabetes, hepatitis and breathing problems.

Critics have countered that the orangutan's death showed that PPS, set up to
rehabilitate animals before they are released into the wild, was inept and
should be shut down.
