A question of honour: the victimisation of a vivisectionist
23 December 2003
Colin Blakemore is the Waynflete Professor of Physiology at the University of Oxford, head of the Medical Research Council (MRC) and a distinguished neuroscientist. In normal circumstances, someone of his eminence would be granted some sort of honour. As we now know, Professor Blakemore has not been granted one because he has chosen to work in a field that requires the use of vivisection and to defend his research publicly. According to a leaked Cabinet Office paper, ministers are thought to have been concerned that the award of an honour would enrage animal rights activists. The Prince of Wales is also thought to have found the proposal offensive.
