LIVE EXPORTERS BEGIN LEGAL ACTION

The live export industry will begin legal action immediately to
stop protesters blocking or sabotaging sheep and cattle
shipments.

Financed by the Australian Farmers Fighting Fund, if successful,
the civil action would mean protestors face hefty jail terms if they
continue to block boats from loading.

Simon Ramsay from the Victorian Farmers Federation won't
reveal how much money the AFFF has put up, but he says the
legal action wouldn't have proceeded without it.

"It certainly underpinned our strategy of applying through the
courts for an injunction, and that's obviously going to be quite
costly, and we wanted to be sure we could provide the best legal
counsel we could. And now we do have the strength from the
Fighting Fund to pursue every legal opportunity we can take."

A Victorian court has further adjourned a hearing into the alleged
contamination of a live sheep shipment from Portland last year.

Animal rights campaigner Ralph Hahnheuser has been charged
with contamination of goods with the intention of causing
economic harm, and trespassing.

Hahnheuser was expected to ask for his bail conditions to be
varied, to allow him to attend a public meeting on the live export
trade at Portland next week.

However he did not proceed with the application, as police
indicated they wouldn't support it.

The case has been adjourned until March.

RODEO PROTEST 'A SUCCESS'
By Donna Hurley

A PROTEST against the calf roping/rope and tie event at a rodeo
in Tamworth on Thursday night was brief but successful,
according to Animal Liberation.

Two Maitland women aged 22 and 54 ran into the arena with a
banner bearing the words, "Calf roping animal abuse", after the
event got underway at the Tamworth showgrounds.

The group's objective, which failed, was to force organisers of
the Australian Bushmen's Campdraft and Rodeo Association
finals rodeo to cancel the event.

Animal Liberation executive officer Mark Pearson said the
women were in the arena for no more than about 15 seconds
before they were grabbed by police.

Amid loud jeers from the crowd, the pair was cautioned for
trespassing and escorted from the arena.

A police spokesman said the pair was walked to their car for
protection against retaliation from crowd members.

Nevertheless Mr Pearson said the group felt the protest was
effective despite the audience's hostile reaction.

"Part of what the organisation is about is getting people to
question something," he said. "Even though they were saying,
'boo or get a job', they still might have questioned what was
going on. They might ask, is it abuse? Our view is that a
reasonable person might start questioning that if they see the
next calf on the ground being dragged with that look in its eye,"
he said.

Mr Pearson said another group member filmed the entire rodeo
which the group would use to take legal action against the
ABCRA.

"We going to be looking at the tape and have bovine
veterinarians give a expert report," he said. The group plans to
compile a brief of evidence and ask Tamworth police to
investigate the event under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
Act.

"We'll win it," Mr Pearson said.
