Petition in Favor of Discontinuation of Cat Extermination and of Implementation of a More Humane Solution for Dealing with the Rabies Disease and It's Elimination.

We, the undersigned hereby turn to the Israeli Governing Authorities with a request to change the following:

  a.. A correction to the legislation on the issue of rabies, in place of the rabies law that has existed since the times of the British Mandate, and an update to better suit our current times.
  b.. An allocation of funds to local authorities for the castration and sterilization as well as vaccination against rabies for street cats.
  c.. State organized rabies prevention to insure the public health by utilizing the oral rabies vaccine (ORV) for wild canids (including feral dogs) and provision of low-cost rabies vaccines for pet cats and dogs.
  d.. The application of humane solutions for dealing with the unvaccinated animal colonies in areas declared as infected, through placement in quarantine and the prevention of their slaughter.

 As a result of a single case of rabies in a cat in the Kfar Saba area in,
Israel, the Israeli government has embarked on a mass extermination program
 of cats in the Sharon area cities by use of poisoned baits thrown out in
the streets and trapping with poles. In addition to cats, dogs are also
being poisoned. People bringing in pets for rabies vaccinations are being
 rewarded with confisication if the pets was not previously vaccinated or
 if the vaccination was overdue.

  Please send polite emails to the following leaders asking them to stop
 this campaign reminding them that this is not the way developed countries
 handle this type of situation and that this action will not prevent the
 spread of rabies.  Ask them to demand comprehensive oral rabies vaccine
 campaigns for wildlife and affordable vaccine programs for domestic
 animals. Also tell them that you will boycott Israeli products and avoid
 visiting Israel until this campaign and the others like it are cancelled.
