MASS culling, which the World Health Organisation (WHO) has called for to 
tackle bird flu across the region, runs the gamut from burying chickens alive to 
burning them to even dumping them into rivers.
Other methods of wiping out large poultry populations include suffocating the 
birds, gassing them or feeding them tranquillisers. 
The WHO has been calling for mass culling of all infected and exposed poultry 
in a bid to avert an even bigger crisis than the one facing the region at 
present.
But animal rights advocates have been fuming over what they see as a 
contravention of protection laws - particularly in cases where chickens are buried 
alive.
