BANGKOK - Intensive farming, with concentrations of animals living in close
proximity to humans, has boosted the incidence of animal diseases affecting
humans, such as the humans - you are quite likely to get some increased
transmission, if not even generation, of deadly bird flu.
'As soon as you have this constellation - high density of animals and close
association with new disease agents,' said Mr Samuel Jutzi, director of the
animal production and health division of the Food and Agriculture Organisation,
on Tuesday.
Between the 1970s and early 1990s, per capita consumption of meat, eggs and
milk in the developing world rose by about 50 per cent, driving a massive
increase in local production, according to the FAO, a United Nations agency.
In Thailand, for example, chicken rearing went from being a small backyard
activity into an industrialised process in which 0.5 per cent of farms produced
nearly two-thirds of all poultry.
