The Rota bird
HONOLULU (AP) -- A small forest bird found only on the Pacific island of Rota
in the Northern Marianas has been designated an endangered species.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service added the Rota bridled white-eye -- named
for the tiny atoll it inhabits and the distinctive ring of white feathers
around its eyes -- to its endangered list earlier this month.
Just about four inches long and one-third of an ounce, the yellowish bird has
a yellow-orange bill, legs and feet.
Fewer than 1,100 of the birds are thought to remain on Rota, down from nearly
11,000 in the early 1980s. It's unknown what caused the sharp decline, but
wildlife officials say development, pesticides, typhoons and natural predators
may have played a role.

not because of those who do evil,
but because of those who look on and do nothing.",
