OAKLAND — Changes to the new Garrett County Animal Control ordinance may
become law Tuesday. The county commissioners left the record open for one more
week after approximately 40 people attended Tuesday’s public hearing to discuss
the changes.
Most opposition was to the license fee for cats. Residents would have to pay
$15 a year for a cat or dog license unless the pet is spayed or neutered,
which would be a $3 fee.
Natalie Newhall asked why people who are responsible for their cats should
have to pay for those who are negligent and why a rabies tag is not used to
identify owners. Pat Newhall asked how licensing would stop people from feeding
feral cats.
