Re: "Shrimp dumping probe approved," Page 1, Jan. 22.
This article overlooked one important aspect of the debate: the environment.
Shrimpers all over the world catch a lot more than just shrimp in their nets,
and most of this other marine life, called bycatch, is thrown overboard dead.
In the Gulf of Mexico, however, shrimpers have been under strict regulations
since the early 1990s. Shrimp nets in the Gulf must have devices that allow
turtles and fish to escape. While there is still a fair amount of bycatch in
U.S. shrimping -- about four pounds of waste for every pound of shrimp caught --
international bycatch rates are as high as 11 pounds per pound of shrimp.
