Chasing geckos across the ceiling and keeping mice in the freezer are two of
the occupational hazards for voluntary wildlife carers like Townsville’s Lana
Allcroft.
The geckos and the mice are part of the dietary requirements of “Summer” the
Blue Winged Kookaburra, which has been in Lana’s care since being found
abandoned and completely helpless, when it was just a few centimetres long with its
eyes still closed.

North Queensland Wildlife Carers is always on the lookout for more volunteers
and Lana says taking part in the groups’ basic training course is a great way
for young and old alike to get involved.
