Area consumers aren't worried about mad cow disease. Cattlemen are.
It all has to do with price.
Before a Canadian Holstein from a Washington state herd tested positive for
mad cow disease on Dec. 23, beef prices had reached record highs.
A reduction in production during the past few years, coupled with increased
demand from high-protein dieters, drove prices up.
According to Tom Jamieson of Uniontown, owner of several Shop 'n Save stores,
including locations in Uniontown and Dunbar Township, ground beef cost more
than $2 per pound in early December.
"Demand was up and we'd stopped receiving beef from Canada because of their
one mad cow. We were at record high prices," Jamieson said.
