Medford, Oregon - Those who love animals already know the troubling dilemmas
faced by animal shelters all over America where personnel must face life and
death questions with no easy answers. HBO's Shelter Dogs looks at a year in the
life of one controversial animal shelter. Although set in New York, the
issues involved are universal.
Shelter Dogs director Cynthia Wade had unrestricted access to rural New
York's Rondout Valley Kennels, where controversial owner Sue Sternberg and her
dedicated staff balance a love for animals with the realities of caring for an
unending stream of dogs that wind up on their doorstep. An animal welfare
pioneer, Sternberg believes every day is an opportunity to improve a shelter dog's
life behaviorally, emotionally and physically, bettering the chances of finding
a loving home.
