MARION -- The Marion Area Humane Society is in dire need of donations to
continue helping animals in Marion County.
For the last six of seven months, the agency has had to watch its budget
closely, explained Robb Lust, president of the board of directors. To keep the
shelter viable, two employees were laid off last year, and the agency has
restricted the hours it spends investigating claims of animal abuse and neglect in
the county.
Unlike the Marion County Dog Warden's Office, the humane society does not
receive steady support from the county. Rather, its operations rely completely on
donations.
Director Lynn Lynn, one of three employees left at the humane society, said
she thinks donations are down because of a poor economy. That hit comes as the
cost for utilities and insurance at the shelter are on the rise.
"We are really, really low on the budget," Lynn said. "We can't keep up."
