LINCOLN — Richard Rockwell had a cup of coffee in his hand and was in his
backyard ready to slip some music into a CD player when he heard the shot.

“I just felt a burning,” Rockwell said Sunday at his ranch, remembering
being hit Oct. 22 by pellets from a hunter’s shotgun. “I wasn’t very happy about
it.”

The 40-year-old, his skin broken from the pellets, ended up going to a
hospital emergency room. Rockwell said the doctor, and a Placer County Sheriff’s
deputy who responded to the shooting, told him if his back hadn’t been toward the
hunter he could have lost an eye from the gunshot.
