PAUL CRAIG
CAMAS VALLEY -- When a truckload of pregnant horses rolled up her Burma Road
driveway, Kathy Hiles knew she had a new purpose in life.
Hiles, 45, had read about the plight of a certain group of mares, whose
bodily functions proved a valuable resource. She was disgusted.
The urine of pregnant horses, she discovered, is used in a menopause medicine
trademarked as Premarin. The unusual remedy, manufactured in pill form,
serves as estrogen or hormone replacement therapy to control the symptoms of
menopause.
The horses are kept constantly pregnant so they can keep producing the
necessary estrogen, Hiles says, and are forced to continually stand in undersized
stalls for hours and months at a time.
The company marketing the drug, pharmaceutical conglomerate Wyeth Inc., has
long been under fire by animal activist groups. According to Wyeth quarterly
reports, sales of the product have declined since 1999.
