Rare species die in shelter near risk area
Ranjana Wangvipula
Five state-run zoos have closed their bird section to the public after
reports that rare birds in a protected shelter in Suphan Buri died.
The five zoos included Dusit zoo in Bangkok, Khao Kiew zoo in Chon Buri. The
remaining three are in Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima and Songkhla.
Natural Resources and Environment Minister Praphat Panyachartrak said
forestry and zoo officials were on alert after the deaths of 36 pheasants, peafowls,
and rare bird species, such as Siamese fireback and silver pheasants in Bung
Chawak in the flu-hit province of Suphan Buri.
The cause of death could not be confirmed and inquiries were underway. The
minister did not rule out avian flu since Bung Chawak, a natural swamp where
more than 100 species take refuge, was not far away from a private zoo which
earlier fed the tigers with dead chickens.
